DESCRIPTION:Join us at the launch to find out more about the story of the family whose home inspired Anne of Green Gables and how that literary connection enriched – and upended – their lives.\nIn 1909 Myrtle and Ernest Webb took possession of an ordinary farm in Cavendish. Ordinary but for one thing: it was already becoming known as the inspiration for Anne of Green Gables\, the novel written by Myrtle’s cousin Lucy Maud Montgomery. The Webbs welcomed visitors to “Green Gables”\, making their home the heart of PEI’s tourist trade. In the 1930s the farm became the centrepiece of a new National Park\, but the family continued to live there for another decade. Myrtle kept a diary from 1924\, when she was a forty-year-old homemaker running a household of eight\, until 1954\, when she was no longer a resident in what was now the most famous house in Canada.

DESCRIPTION:Montgomery enthusiasts are invited to enjoy a fancy Afternoon Tea while we retell the amusing stories connected to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s visit to the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead in Orwell\, Eastern PEI. The Governor General at the time\, Earl Grey\, wished to meet the creator of the delightful “Anne of Green Gables”. \nDr. Andrew Macphail and Lucy Maud Montgomery were both Island authors. Montgomery was a dedicated journal keeper. The extracts from one of her journals will tell entertaining stories and her impressions of the people and place during her visit. Through her entries we get a glimpse of the woman writer and her sense of humour. Over tea discussions about her writing\, and her struggle to be taken seriously as a woman. \nMacphail\, a well-known writer and professor at McGill University\, Montreal\, was born and at the Homestead. \nWe invite you to enjoy a sumptuous Afternoon Tea while learning and talking about all things Maud. \nWednesday and Friday afternoons in July\, August and September from 2:00 – 3:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Children who love Anne\, Emily\, Pat\, Jane\, and other delightful characters created by Lucy Maud Montgomery will be able to experience a ‘pretend’ school day in the times of Montgomery’s characters who attended one-room schools. Our one-room school will have small numbers and a range of ages. \nReading excerpts from Montgomery’s books\, creative writing\, penmanship\, dramatization\, baking\, and walk along the stream in the forest will part of the experience. \nOur “Great Room” would be converted into a ‘school room’ for the day. The historical house is an ideal backdrop. The forests that surround the homestead are filled with inspirational nature Montgomery loved. Lunch will be prepared by the students under the cook’s supervision\, from Anne’s recipe book. \nThe camp has a strong emphasis on reading\, (extracts from the books)\, writing (reflecting on why you like your favourite character) and nature appreciation. Children must already read and write; we suggest grade 3 and older. Children are encouraged to dress up in early 1900’s costumes\, some can be borrowed. There will also be old-fashioned games played. \nA portion of time will be outside in the woods as well as games on the grass. Please be prepared for mosquitos and hot days. \nTuesdays and Thursdays in July\, August and September 10am -4pm\, minimum 3\, maximum 10 attendees\, reservations essential. Cost is $25 per child. Ask about family discount.

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to come and watch some of PEI’s wonderful artists at this plein air event. This the first in a series of five\, each with its own particular location and theme. To celebrate Montgomery’s 150th birthday\, each event offers some of her words to inspire the artists. The theme for this event is landscapes\, streetscapes\, villages and people. Artists have two hours to finish their artwork and you get to choose which one you like best. You can also purchase some beautiful art for your home or cottage. Treats and background music are on offer for artists and spectators. \nToday’s inspiration: \n“It isn’t too old a house\, too old houses are sad. And it isn’t too young\, too young houses are crude. It’s just mellow\, I love all those magnificent trees on the lawn. SUMMARY:Montgomery's Secret Paths
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pleasant 8.5 km hike through some of L. M. Montgomery’s favourite trails and locations. Food entertainment and little surprises will be part of your journey. \nYou will start your hike with a breakfast sandwich\, fruit\, coffee or tea at Samuel’s in Avonlea Village. Begin your walk through the gentle slopes of Cavendish Grove to the Dunelands Trail and Cavendish Beach. Then proceed to a flat terrain walk to Cavendish corner. Crossing the street\, tiptoe through the Haunted Wood and on to Montgomery Park where you can sit with Maud for a picture. You will be hosted by the Cordial Café for a nutritious blueberry scone and a comfort station stop. You can also refill your water bottle while at the Park. Take a few minutes to take a break and listen to the entertainment provided by the talented Olivia Blacquiere. \nFrom Montgomery Park\, walk towards the Site of L. M. Montgomery’s Home and back out to Cavendish corner. Then go down Hammie’s Lane and back through Cavendish Grove\, down Clark’s Lane to Avonlea Village for lunch. The location for the lunch is being provided by La Rose Bistro who will serve smoked salmon on parsnip latkes with chive crema and Lone Oak Beer Garden serving up mussels\, nachos and sweet potato fries. One free glass of wine or beer is included with your meal. \nRounding up the experience will be your chance to try a cone of Canada’s favourite ice cream from Cows. All this with some local entertainment! \nThis hike will give you a chance to discover the secret paths in the area and provides a multitude of photo opportunities. \nWhat you need: \n\nClosed toe shoes\, hiking boots\, or sneakers.\nCamera\nHat\nSunscreen\nLayers of clothing\nRain jacket\nBackpack\nWater bottle\n\nSchedule: \n\n8:30 am Registration\, breakfast and entertainment\n9:00 am Hike starts\nMidway point: Comfort station\, snack\, and entertainment\n12:00 until approx. 1:00 pm Hike ends\, lunch\, and entertainment
