Planning Your Tour
There are countless ways to enjoy The Inspiring Places of L.M. Montgomery Literary Tour, all dependent upon your personal time availability and your personal interests. However, we do have a number of suggested ways to plan your tour, whether self-guided or guided. For specific tour sites and experiences information, please refer to the Inspiring Places and Related Experiences pages.
Self-Guided Experiences
The Cavendish Walking Tour
Duration between 3-5 hours depending on your individual curiosity and mobility.
The Cavendish Walking Tour includes the following tour sites:
- Montgomery Park
- L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home.
- Cavendish United Church
- Cavendish Post Office (a Related Experience)
- Cavendish Cemetery
- The Haunted Wood
- Green Gables
- Lover’s Lane
If you are originating at Montgomery Park, please be aware that parking is limited. Here, you will see the cairns marking the site as a National Historic Site of Canada, and you will visit: the L.M. Montgomery statue (named A Glimpse of Beauty); learn about Cavendish’s founding families and the Avonlea Women’s Institute; embark on the path which leads to L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home; visit Cavendish United Church and the neighbouring Cavendish Post Office; cross Route 13 at the designated crosswalk to Cavendish Cemetery (caution with oncoming traffic is advised); visit the resting place of L.M. Montgomery at the Cavendish Cemetery; stroll to the Haunted Wood; and on to Green Gables Heritage Place, Green Gables House and Lover’s Lane.
If you are originating at Green Gables Heritage Place, parking is more abundant. From Green Gables, it is a leisurely walk through Lover’s Lane and the Haunted Wood; stroll to the Cavendish Cemetery; crossing Route 13 at the designated crosswalk to Montgomery Park (caution with oncoming traffic is advised); and follow the path which leads to L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home; on to Cavendish United Church; Cavendish Post Office; and back across Route 13 through the Haunted Wood to your point of origin.
Admission is free to all locations except the visit to Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home. Packaged ticketing for these two experiences are available. One-Day Tour
The One-Day Tour recommendation involves auto touring, combining the Cavendish Walking Tour plus the following sites:
- Cavendish Shore, Oceanview, PEI National Park, 100 Terre Rouge Lane, Cavendish
- L.M. Montgomery Birthplace, Intersection of Routes 6 and 20, New London, P.E.I.
- Anne of Green Gables Museum, 4542 Route 20, Park Corner, P.E.I.
- Lake of Shining Waters, 4542 Route 20, Park Corner, P.E.I.
- Senator Donald Montgomery House/The Inn at Ingleside, 4615 Route 20, Park Corner, P.E.I. (Please note: The Inn is typically rented to guests – please feel free to take pictures of the Inn and grounds, however, please respect guests’ privacy and do not enter the building or look in the windows.
