Fall is one of the best times to explore the L.M. Montgomery Literary Tour on PEI! If you have one day to tour Lucy Maud Montgomery’s world here is how to spend it!
Begin your day by driving to the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner. The Museum is open from 10-4 in September & 11-4 from Oct. 1-15th. Wander through the historic house that Montgomery often visited as a child and see the room where she was married! Autumn is also the perfect time to explore the colourful trails on the property!
Next, drive to the Birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery in New London. Although Montgomery was born in this house, she did not live here for long. She moved to Cavendish to live with her grandparents after her mom died before she turned two. The museum, however, has many displays including Montgomery’s scrapbooks and writings and a replica of her wedding dress.
After you have toured the Birthplace, make your way to Cavendish and stop for a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants. Samuel’s Coffee House in Cavendish is offering cat cookies and pink milk matchas to celebrate Montgomery’s 150th birthday until September 22nd!
There is much to explore in Cavendish as this is where Montgomery spent her childhood and wrote Anne of Green Gables. After lunch, go to the Green Gables Heritage Place with the iconic “Green Gables” house. The house and exhibits highlight both the fictitious Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s life. From Green Gables Heritage Place, you can walk through the Haunted Woods Trail to Montgomery Park. The trails are especially vibrant at this time of year! Montgomery Park was created to honour L.M. Montgomery with a bronze statue of her. If it is a nice day for walking, you can continue your walk from Montgomery Park to L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home (Just be sure to pay for entry at the office). This is the property where Montgomery was raised by her grandparents. The house is no longer standing, but it is a lovely location to visit and see the place that inspired so much of Montgomery’s writings.
In the evening, attend On the Shore with Maud at Carr’s Oyster Bar! This event celebrates Montogmery’s 150th birthday with seafaring songs and storytelling! It is happening every Thursday evening from 7-9 pm until September 19th, 2024. Get your tickets here.
